Founded in 1872, the city of McPherson was named for General James Birdseye McPherson, a Civil War Union General who was mortally wounded in the Battle of Atlanta in 1864. A life-size bronze likeness of the general resides in Memorial Park. McPherson is a National Main Street Community and has been called one of the most livable small towns in America. McPherson's Main Street offers over 50 unique retail shops, a wide range of services, restaurants and entertainment. In addition, a number of beautifully maintained public parks cover over 200 acres. Belli Brothers Model Train Layout

Friends of Maxwell Wildlife Refuge
Located about 20 miles northeast of McPherson, a 2,250 acre wildlife refuge offers the opportunity to see roaming herds of bison and elk, as well as other prairie dwellers. The McPherson State Fishing Lake is situated on the west border. Tours are given. Call 620-628-4455 for more information.

Historical Walking or Driving Tour
A walking/driving tour takes visitors by historic homes, a native limestone courthouse, and a turn-of-the-century opera house. Brochures can be obtained at the Convention & Visitors Bureau office at 306 N. Main Street. Call 800-324-8022 for more information.

McPherson College

McPherson County Courthouse
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the McPherson County Courthouse is an excellent example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, common to Kansas' 19th century courthouses. A tower houses a clock that was added to the courthouse in 1908. Located at the corner of N. Maple Street and Kansas Avenue. Call 620-241-8149 for more information.

McPherson Museum
Housed in the elegant 1920s Vaniman Mansion, the McPherson Museum features original imported wall paper, hand-crocheted lace-edged curtains, vintage furniture and other historical exhibits. Located at 1130 E. Euclid Street. Call 620-241-8464 for more information.

McPherson Opera House
Built in 1888 at a cost of $42,000, this elegant architectural gem with a seating capacity of 900 is indicative of the Romanesque Revival style with many kinds of decorative brick. McPherson Valley Wetlands
The McPherson Valley Wetlands cover over 4,000 acres. The area is designated for waterfowl and other hunting during the season and wildlife viewing the rest of the year. A wide variety of birds can be seen during fall and spring migrations. Call 620-241-7669 for more information.

Statue Of General Mcpherson, Memorial Park
Dedicated in 1917, this statue honors General James Birdseye McPherson, the city and county namesake and the highest ranking Union officer to die on the battlefield during the Civil War. Located at the 100 Block of N. Maple.
